Inviting the Neighbours Around to Paint

A public art project that transformed empty shops and public spaces into open studios. Passers-by were invited to contribute to large collaborative paintings with local artists. Playful, spontaneous, and inclusive, the project blurred the line between artist and audience, turning everyday spaces into canvases.

Launched in 2015, Inviting the Neighbours Around to Paint transformed everyday public spaces into collective studios. In empty shops and other unconventional venues, passers-by were invited to stop, pick up a brush, and contribute to large collaborative paintings. Local artists were on hand to support and encourage participation, but the creative direction was shaped by those who walked in.

The project embraced spontaneity and inclusivity, blurring the line between artist and audience. By turning spaces of transit into spaces of creativity, it invited people to slow down, connect with others, and leave a visual mark on their community.

Each day brought new contributions, layering the artwork with fresh perspectives. The result was a living, growing piece of art that reflected the diversity and spirit of the community itself. Inviting the Neighbours Around to Paint demonstrated the simple but powerful truth that when people are given the tools and permission to create, they can transform both spaces and relationships.
